Acupuncture and Moxibustion

Acupuncture and moxibustion can be used to stimulate nerves and muscle tissue, and also to treat a wide range of health conditions. While acupuncture involves the use of very fine needles, moxibustion is the burning of the mugwort plant on or near the skin; this is also usually on or near to an acupuncture point.

What is the difference between Japanese acupuncture and Chinese acupuncture? Put simply, Japanese acupuncture needles are thinner than Chinese ones, and so the chance of feeling any discomfort is less.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recommended acupuncture as a treatment for lower back pain, and the NHS has acknowledged evidence that acupuncture can be beneficial as treatment of the following conditions:

  • chronic back pain
  • dental pain
  • pain and discomfort during gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • headache
  • nausea and vomiting after an operation
  • pain and discomfort during oocyte retrieval (a procedure used during IVF)
  • osteoarthritis of the knee

Both acupuncture and moxibustion are built on the belief that energy flows through the body in channels. It is believed that when energy cannot flow freely through the body, this can cause illnesses, and that acupuncture and moxibustion can be used to restore this energy and so restore health.

Shiatsu massage

Shiatsu is a type of deep tissue massage. Like acupuncture, shiatsu aids the flow of energy through your body. For shiatsu treatments you should wear loose fitting clothes; there is no need for the practitioner to touch your skin directly.

As a skilled and experienced practitioner, Takako is able to ascertain the correct amount of pressure required to treat each individual client, which does differ between each person. Shiatsu is one of her most popular treatments.

Takako also offers combination treatments – with acupuncture and moxibustion – which are particularly effective for the relief of stress, headaches and musculoskeletal diseases. Please contact her to discuss the most suitable options for your condition.
